CLEAR Bayview, or Community-Led Environmental Air Research, is an environmental justice project in Bayview Hunters Point. Youth and residents learn about air pollution, public health, and local environmental justice issues while collecting and understanding air quality data.

Big Ideas, Real Impact.

The CLEAR Bayview project designs and implements an air monitoring study that addresses the gaps in air monitoring data. The project is deeply rooted in the community in two ways:

1) Gaps in data are identified by the AB617 Bayview Hunters Point Community Steering Committee (CSC), and 

2) Youth from the community are directly involved in the design and implementation of the study. 

The Sourcing and Emissions Data Gap Subcommittee (SEDGSC) of the AB 617 CSC identified a significant number of unmonitored sites and pollutants (e.g. gas air toxics, fugitive dust, Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM)). To effectively address local-scale air pollution with its Community Emission Reduction Plan (CERP) the CSC must have an accurate assessment of air pollution in the community. 

In this project, MHCF is partnering with the Bay Area Air District to deploy their mobile air monitoring van and other air monitoring equipment and expertise to address the data gaps. MHCF is partnering with the community-based organization Leaders for Environmental Activism Reclaiming Their Health (Leaders4EARTH) to educate and engage a cohort of youth in air monitoring, community awareness building, and STEM-related careers. 

Led by Marie Harrison Community Foundation and Leaders4EARTH in collaboration with the Bay Area Air District and the AB 617 Bayview Hunters Point Community Steering Committee (CSC).

The CLEAR Project is supported by the "California Climate Investments" (CCI) program, a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Invest dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment--particularly in disadvantaged communities.

GOALS

  • Collect air quality data in Southeast SF BVHP through the local ownership and design of this technical project to equip and empower CSC to make best informed decisions

  • Create a local workforce knowledgeable and empowered to advocate for their community's needs and drive change from within

Youth Training Learning Objectives:

  • Youth have an understanding of public health, air pollution, and environmental justice principles.

  • Youth understand the history of air pollution and environmental justice in Bayview Hunters Point and similar communities throughout the globe. This includes the health implications of environmental health issues, and how they impact marginalized communities disproportionately.

  • Youth understand the various career avenues in environmental health and public health including, but not limited to, policy, epidemiology, research, GIS, and general green jobs.

  • Youth understand tools and methodologies for researching air pollution, mapping air pollution, data analysis.

  • Youth develop skills in leadership, public speaking, civil engagement, community organizing, youth activism, and creative outlets.
